You probably know the feeling: It’s hot, the city is buzzing, and you just want to unwind somewhere, ideally with your toes in the sand and an ice-cold drink in your hand. And that’s exactly where Strandbar Herrmann comes in.
I’ll tell you honestly: This is my urban beach getaway in the heart of Vienna. No flights, no stress, just take the subway to Schwedenplatz or Landstraße, a few steps down to the Urania – and voila, you’re standing on real sand, right in the middle of Herrmannpark. The beach bar is right on the Donau. That doubles the beach feeling.

Barefoot in the city
What I love about the beach bar, Strandbar Herrmann: You arrive, take off your shoes (yes, really), sit down in one of those brightly colored lounge chairs, and suddenly you feel like you’re on vacation. Palm trees all around, soft beats, people playing bocce—or just chilling. There are even petanque courts if you want to get fancy. But what you’ll definitely notice first is the large area of sand and hundreds of lounge chairs, almost all of which are occupied.
And the best thing about the Strandbar Herrmann? This relaxed vibe permeates the entire area. No one is rushing, no one is stressing—everyone is just hanging out. That’s how it should be. Whether business people or families, everyone is there.
What I also really like: Every now and then, DJs play, but not in a „we’re going to party“ kind of way, but more like „I’ll bring you the sunset with a soundtrack.“ Perfect for a sundowner. Otherwise, there are always various events at the Strandbar Herrmann. For example, during the World Cup, there was a public viewing there. So, it’s always good to stay up to date so you don’t miss any events.
Drinks, Baby
Let’s talk about the drinks for a moment, because let’s be honest: What’s a beach bar without good cocktails? The menu is impressive. Classics like the Mojito and Caipi, but also a few more unusual creations. My favorite: the „Sportsman“ – non-alcoholic but super refreshing. For those who prefer Team Aperol or Spritz – don’t worry, we’ve got them all. And don’t worry: the drinks aren’t outrageously expensive. Sure, it’s a stylish bar in Vienna, but you’re not paying your entire salary for two cocktails. And the quality is just right.
If you’re worried about waiting an incredibly long time for your cocktail, I can reassure you. There are several bars throughout the Herrmann Beach Bar. There’s a main bar, which is rounded in the middle, but there are others along the sides where you can also get a drink.
The cuisine has a bit of an oriental touch – falafel, börek, tabbouleh, and grilled sandwiches with fillings that will remind you a bit of a vacation in Tel Aviv. And then there are the patata frites – basically fries, but better. If you’re looking for something heartier, go for a BBQ sandwich. Everything comes out quickly, tastes good, and you don’t have to move – that’s exactly what I want when I’m sinking into a lounge chair.

Whether you want to chill alone, stop by with friends for a few spritzers, or are on your first date (pro tip: it works great!) – Strandbar Herrmann delivers. For me, it’s a summer staple. Like the first iced coffee of the year or the playlist of summer songs you listen to year after year. Another unique thing about the bar is that you can’t make reservations. You just have to show up and, the old-school way, grab a spot or sit down with someone. Maybe we’ll have a fun conversation, who knows?
