Am roan – outlook for good things

Hidden on the hill of the Wienerwald is the restaurant “am roan”, which reopened in 2023. A former typical inn shines in a new, young splendor. Viennese cuisine is presented here with a completely new concept and casual style. The food is presented here in its simplicity without much fanfare. You can expect simplicity with a special twist here.

The location of the restaurant is incredibly exclusive, as „am roan“ is alone on the mountain. There are no annoying noises or something similar. There is only the quiet forest around you. And the best thing is that you have a unique view of Vienna. No wonder there is such a huge terrace here to enjoy the view. I can imagine that it must be relaxing to sit here in the summer, with an apero spritz in peace and enjoy the view.

In terms of furnishing style, “am roan” completely suits my taste. The first thing that comes to mind when I enter the restaurant is the word CLEAN. Simple, elegant Scandinavian style. Everything is bright and there are different lamps everywhere. Designers have played with wood everywhere and there are different seating options. The whole style is then rounded off with black minimalist accents.

I’m really a fan of light, but more indirect lighting. But in „am roan“ direct and indirect are combined, and that is really bright. A tick too much for my taste. A slightly more dimmed light would be more pleasant, at least in the evening hours.

Dogs are welcome at „am roan“. And this is reflected in all the details, for example there is a funny illustration on the menu. You can tell that the person who designed the new concept really paid attention to every detail.

The menu is clear and only a few dishes are offered. Which doesn’t have to mean a bad thing. It’s better to offer fewer dishes where the quality, appearance and taste are right, than to offer too many dishes and then be dissatisfied with them. When you look through the menu you can immediately see the chef’s style. Classic products served extravagantly, but still with taste in mind.

We really didn’t hold back when it came to eating. As a starter we tried the beef tartare, in a very unusual and unique way. Because the beef tartar at „am roan“ contains whiskey, anchovies and a very special African spice mixture. I’ve never seen such a combination before, let alone tried it. A little spicy but still tasty is my resume. We also had to try a classic beef soup with pancake strips.

For the main course we chose classics. To my great and positive surprise, „am roan“ offers fries with truffle mayo. – a dream and so much for classics. 🙂 Nevertheless, we decided on the Wiener Schnitzel with potato salad, a fried chicken salad, a butter brioche burger with roasted pork and horseradish mayonnaie and, finally, the wild garlic ravioli with butter and sage. The taste and presentation of every dish was top.

I am very happy that beautiful, aesthetic restaurants are constantly being created in Vienna. The „am roan“ is the best proof that a redesign with a new, fresh concept pays off. I had never heard of this restaurant before and since I was really excited about it, I wanted to show it off.

The appearance is great, whether from the outside or inside. The location is downright amazing. You won’t find anything like this twice in Vienna. The price-performance ratio is okay. This location is also perfect for large or small parties. And recently you can even get married here. The am roan is a hidden treasure on the hill in Vienna.
