Blumenwiese – a blooming lawn in the city

A place in the city where more than just flowers bloom. I’m of course talking about the IT location in summer: The Blumenwiese, on the Danube Canal in the 2nd district in Vienna. This is on the sunny side, right next to the jetty on the water, on the Danube Canal. This outdoor bar not only impresses with its special appearance, but also with its guests. Everyone is there in the summer.

The decor is colorful and crazy, just like a real flower meadow. There are different areas. Firstly the front area, where you look out over the water, then the lounge area, which is suitable for several people/groups, and the standard area. The lounge and the standard area are both covered mit a foldable roof. A highlight of this bar is that many events take place and many different DJs perform here and ensure a good atmosphere.

It’s officially cocktail time. And there are a lot of them in the Blumenwiese bar. To start we ordered the “Pornhub Martini”. Yes, they’re really called that. consisting of vodka, passion fruit liqueur, vanilla, passion fruit, lime and Schlumberger Sparkling foam, these were incredibly tasty and rival any Pornstar Martini.

In addition to the large selection of cocktails, there is also a good selection of food that goes well with the cocktails from the Blumenwiese. As a starter I ordered the edamame. Garnished with sesame oil and sea salt. I just love this snack. It has a lot of plant protein, fiber, healthy omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins. A really tasty, healthy snack that is addictive. And a slightly less healthy snack was the calamari fritti with the aioli – just asa tasty as the edamame.

As a good basis for all the cocktails to come, we decided on burgers for the main course. So we ordered the dry aged double cheeseburger and regular fries. For the sauce I chose a truffle mayo. The next burger we ordered was the El Patron Burger. In contrast to the other burger, this one also had jalapeños, chorizo chips and guacamole. We ordered this with sweet potato fries.

Of course, we ordered more cocktails than just the Pornhub Martini at the Blumenwiese bar. Because the different types of sangria smiled at us. There are the craziest combinations that sounded delicious when we read them, so it was clear that we would order at least one of them. We initially decided on the “Beachclub Pornstar Punch”, but unfortunately they didn’t have it anymore that evening. What a shame! Then we decided on the “Flora Adora Wildcup”, consisting of gin, sugar, lime, blackberries, blueberries, garnet apple syrup and soda. But since a 1.5l sangria isn’t enough, we also ordered the „Dieter Bowle(s)“. Vodka, lemon, sugar, watermelon, basil and ginger ale.

This beach bar is the meeting place for the IT people in Vienna and is therefore always fully booked. So a reservation is a must. The entrance area to the outdoor bar is a bit narrow, as you are somewhat restricted from the jetty by the Danube Canal and many Viennese like to sit on the edge of the Danube Canal and enjoy the sunset there. It can get a bit tight while waiting for a seat. But once you reach your sitting place, you do not mind it anymore.

But let’s get to the overall assessment of the Blumenwiese. The bar looks very nice and you feel like you are in a VIP area for the sunset the whole time. The place is always very busy, which is not a bad thing. Just to know. The selection of cocktails is outstanding. The small selection of warm dishes is completely sufficient and delicious. Ultimately, it’s a nice place to drink cocktails and chat in Vienna.
