An authentic French cafe in the heart of Vienna – the Cafe Francais
The Cafe Francais is the main meeting place for students in the 1st district in Vienna. With an incredible view of the Votive Church, this cafe invites you to linger. No matter what time of day, Cafe Francais is always full, probably due to its minimalist French flair.
Let’s take a look at Cafe Francais from the outside. Clean facade with a thick black border for the white logo and the typical large awnings that we know only too well from Paris. During warm seasons there is also plenty of outside seating with a breathtaking view. Perfect for switching off from everyday stress.
The inside of the cafe Francais is very simple, but still has something special. It is the combination of minimalism and a touch of pomp. This can best be compared with the classic wooden chairs and the turquoise-blue velvet-covered bench. The large but delicate chandelier hanging in the middle of the room is also an eye-catcher. The advantage of Cafe Francais is that there is a high ceiling height and that simply makes the entire cafe more airy. And the mirrored wall above the bench makes the room appear even larger.
In terms of food and drink, classic dishes as well as authentic French dishes are offered here. These are, for example, onion soup with bread and cheese or a beef tartare. There is a sufficient selection of dishes. In addition to the dishes that are always offered, different daily plates are offered every day as well. That day I chosed the cheeseburger with truffle fries. First of all, the portion size – large. Then I wasn’t expecting a mushroom topping with truffles – it was definitely interesting.
The French love wine and Cafe Francais does the same. When it comes to the drinks selection, there is an entire page just for wine. Standard drinks such as cafes and soft drinks are of course also offered. When it comes to aperitifs, however, there isn’t much of a selection – in fact, no Aperol on the menu. That’s why I decided on a Lillet Spritzer. For me it was more of a cucumber spritz but still delicious.
Cafe Francais is a typical French bistro like you would see in Paris. You immediately feel at home and could spend hours there, which I’m sure many people do. Whether it’s to gossip or even learn, there’s a place for everyone. As long as you make a reservation. Otherwise the portions are really big and tasty. The price-performance ratio is right here. So if you’re looking for some French flair in downtown Vienna, then Cafe Francais is exactly the right place.
