Attention all sports and nature enthusiasts, there is an insider for one of the most beautiful views in Austria.
The so-called Schafberg is located on Lake Wolfgangsee, in Salzburg. It is about a 3 hour ride from Vienna by car. When the weather is clear you can even see as far as Germany. From the mountain summit you can see all the surrounding three big lakes of the Salzkammergut:
Lake Wolfgangsee, Mondsee and Attersee.
There are 2 ways to get to the mountaintop: on foot or with a small train. – we decided to take the train. The train station is located directly in St. Wolfgang. Luckily we bought the tickets for the trip up and down early in the morning, as it turned out that almost every ride was already fully booked at the train station. Without lying, we placed ourselves in the last four places. The train is cute but not really comfortable. To put it more dramatically, I don’t know what could have been more strenuous, the 3 hour walk uphill or the 35 minute train ride.
The train is a masterpiece of engineering and can climb to a degree of incline up to more than 250%.
A view that will simply amaze you.
On the way up there is a small intermediate station where you can get on or off, for a smaller ascent about 45 minutes. – We drove straight to the summit. Once at the top you only have to climb a few meters to buy a drink or something to eat. There is a luxury hotel with a restaurant, a small sausage stand and a self-service tavern. We just grabbed something from the sausage stand and sat on a bench so we could enjoy the view undisturbed. We were up on the mountain for about one hour and a half – the time just flew by – before we drove down back to St. Wolfgang.
All in all, the journey up and down was quite strenuous even though we didn’t walked that much at all. Nevertheless, it was a breathtaking experience that you won’t easily forget.
