Prague diaries – an authentic old city

„Prague isn´t just a city, but an endity of some kind.“ – Sezin Koehler.

Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic, about 3.5 hours by car from Vienna. And was the historical capital of Bohemia and the important royal and imperial residence city in the Holy Roman Empire, especially under the Přemyslids, Luxembourgers and Habsburgs. In the 14th century, under the reign of Charles IV, Prague became a political and cultural center in Europe. The city is still very much influenced by the past and shows the beautiful Gothic buildings in the city center. No wonder the city is also called the “City of a Hundred Towers”.

Prague, like all capitals, is currently undergoing change. There are the old beautiful parts but now there are also modern parts of the city. But it’s not just districts that are modernizing, but also public transport, restaurants and even working conditions. The city is trying to attract a lot of young people, not just to visit, but to stay. And Prague definitely has a lot to offer.

Here is a summary of my trip to Prague.

Lunch at Terasa u Prince:

The rooftop restaurant was on my top 1 on my list. I’ve been to Prague a few times and I always enjoy coming back here. The Terasa u Prince is located on the roof, obviously, of an old luxury hotel, called Hotel u Prince (Hotel at the Prince), in the middle of the main square. And I think the best thing about it is that not so many tourists know about it.We once ordered my beloved truffle tagliatelle and the mixed spies. The food and drinks were really tasty. The staff was friendly and the prices were right too. I will definitely come again.

Overall score 10/10.

Cocktail and Dessert time:

Truly there are places every 10 meters where you can get something to drink in Prague. With so much choice, of course we couldn’t help ourselves and simply had to sit down in a bar, in this case it was the PopUpBar, and try a cocktail. I had a gold margaritha and my fiancé had a classic mojito. Both were very good, but with the golden Margaritha you have to be careful not to get covered from top to bottom with gold dust.

What we saw while strolling through the city is that there seems to be a French boom in Prague. Macarons are sold everywhere in a wide variety of creations and combinations. And anyone who has read my Paris blog post (Paris diaries) knows that I love macarons. That’s why we bought 8 different varieties from the Paul pastry shop.

The Hotel:

Welcome to NH Collection Prague Carlo IV. The hotel is in the middle of the city and you can easily walk everywhere. From the first moment you enter the hotel you feel like a princess. Or maybe it’s because a concierge opens the door for you. The hotel exudes grandeur and luxury. This is how Expresses used to feel. The staff is highly professional and happy to fulfill your every wish.

Our room was a true dream. I have rarely felt so comfortable. We had our own living room and bedroom. I would definitely have liked to stay longer. Of course we also had to try out the SPA area. Unfortunately I wasn’t allowed to take any photos there, but you can believe me that it is a worthy wellness area for such a beautiful luxury hotel.

Dinner at Pizzeria Da Pietro Praha:

I’m lucky that a friend of mine lives in Prague so I relied on your advice about dinner and we met at Da Pietro restaurant. The restaurant is very cute in terms of colors. Everything is light blue and pink. Simply cute! There we ordered the truffle pizza and the prosciutto cotto. I have to say I haven’t had such a great truffle pizza in a long time. Because they had put a lot of cheese on the pizza topping and even an egg. Really tasty!

Overall score 9/10.

Breakfast time at the hotel:

The restaurant and breakfast area in the hotel was a dream. A true experience. Not only did the room look noble and majestic, but there was also a harp player who played gentle melodies the entire time. I thought it was great. The selection of food and drinks was completely satisfactory for me. You can tell that the hotel has adapted to the needs of its guests, as there was mainly only healthy food and drink. A highlight for me were the smoothies and the detox juice. Of course there was bacon and eggs too, but I prefer to err on the healthier side when it comes to breakfast.

The old town:

The old town of Prague is something special. You can easily reach it via the Charles Bridge, apart from all the tourists standing in the way, it’s a nice walk across the Vltava. A big difference for me is that, in contrast to Vienna’s old town, everything here in Prague is a bit darker. Like the bridge, for example, which is actually completely black.

The old buildings, churches and the castle have of course all been renovated. Prague Castle is a must have point when visiting the city. But be careful, you should wear the right shoes because you have to climb a lot of stairs to get up there. But the climb is always worth it. Because from the top you have a wonderful view of the whole of Prague.

Lunch at Cerveny Jelen:

For our last meal in Prague we decided to visit the restaurant Cerveny jelen, which means red deer. A slightly more upscale steak place. Very large and modern on the inside. And since the weather was nice, the small outdoor terrace was also open. I ordered the beef brisket and it was really tender. Then we also had the rump steak. Both dishes were served with potatoes and vegetables. Very juicy. The food was really good, but unfortunately there wasn’t much of a choice if you were just a little bit hungry.

Overall score 8/10.

Summary:

I love Prague. There is always something to see and you can reach everything on foot. And if you don’t feel like walking, you can book an Uber which costs the equivalent of around €5. The city is alive. Whether by tourists or locals. This time we experienced both. When it comes to prices, you shouldn’t be too mistaken because Prague isn’t really that much cheaper. Since there are so many tourists, it is understandable that prices in the city are a little higher. Eating and drinking is still a bit cheaper for us but there is no difference when it comes to shopping.

Nonetheless, Prague is definitely worth a visit. Be it the culture, cuisine or party life.

Conclusion:

Prague is a great city for a weekend trip

Prague, CZ

book a hotel directly in the city
