Traditional cuisine that everyone loves and has been doing for centuries
The noble restaurant Plachutta Wollzeile is located in the heart of Vienna’s 1st district. The now world-famous restaurant is part of Vienna’s culture and has become an integral part of Viennese life. Whether family, friends or celebrities, everyone wants to go to Plachutta to enjoy traditional Viennese cuisine classics.
You can recognize the restaurant from afar. A beautifully decorated white facade with the restaurant’s emerald green logo. The building exudes elegance even from the outside. The interior of the restaurant is classic yet posh. The typical green color can be found everywhere here and gives the restaurant a certain coziness. Since traditional restaurants in Vienna also want to continue to develop, there is also a glazed winter garden. Which is converted into an outdoor terrace in summer.
The Plachutta is the local hotspot in Vienna where celebrities and business people typically meet. There are even several “Walls of Fame” – where well-known people who have been guests in this restaurant have been hung since the beginning. Just be careful not to stumble when looking at all the pictures, as they are located directly on the walls near the stairs that lead to the toilet.
The restaurant is open from 11:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Without a reservation in advance it is almost impossible to get a table, even if it is the last one in the corner. The exception obviously applies to regular customers – but that’s probably the case everywhere.
The restaurant’s top dish is the Tafelspitz – the emperor’s favorite piece. Consisting of a strong beef soup with root vegetables and marrow slices in which the meat lies. The whole thing is traditionally served in a hot copper kettle. The soup is usually eaten first, usually with Frittaten – salty pancakes cut into strips. Then you eat the meat. Apple horseradish, chive sauce and roasted potatoes are served as side dishes. The portion really shouldn’t be underestimated, for me alone it was more than filling. So I recommend sharing the dish with someone.
The Tafelspitz is the recommended dish, but the restaurant also offers other classics that taste just as good. I had a beef tartare, the mild version, as a starter before the tafelspitz. Very soft and supple – the finest quality you could wish for. Another classic that the whole world knows is the Wiener Schnitzel. Originally it is made from the best part of the calf. With a side dish of potato salad.
The typical kasierschmarrn with stewed plums would be recommended as a dessert, but I didn’t have an inch of space left. There were other classics to choose from, such as topfennockerl or pancakes. Everything very tasty but also heavy. Next time I’ll probably leave out the starter to leave some room for dessert. Because the Viennese have always had a sweet tooth.
The Plachutta is truly an experience where you can enjoy classic Viennese cuisine at the highest level. That’s why you shouldn’t forget to dress accordingly. Because as we know, clothes make people. And no one follows this secret rule more than the Viennese. Since the service in Vienna is usually not the friendliest – in this/our case our waiter was very friendly – he is automatically a little more polite if you are elegantly dressed. – just a little fact about the gastronomy in Vienna.
Conclusion:
a true noble restaurant
