„The art of cooking is among the most intimate things that we can do for another“- Charlie Trotter, Salonplafond
Sometimes you enter a room and immediately feel that it is special. The Salonplafond at the MAK in Vienna is exactly such a place. It combines excellent cuisine, exceptional design and an atmosphere that inspires and invites you to linger. Whether for a relaxed breakfast, an extensive dinner or a drink at the bar – you will always find the right setting here.
The Salonplafond is centrally located in the Museum of Applied Arts (MAK) at Stubenring 5 – right in the heart of Vienna. It is perfectly accessible thanks to its immediate proximity to the subway, tram and Wien Mitte. A plus point for anyone who wants to combine their visit to the museum with a culinary experience.

The design
As soon as you enter, the salonplafond, you notice that nothing has been left to chance here. The interior, designed by architect Michael Embacher, combines classic Viennese tavern elements with modern design. Historical furniture by Oswald Haerdtl meets textiles by Josef Frank, and the carefully selected lighting creates a warm, inviting atmosphere. Despite the well-thought-out concept, nothing feels overloaded – it’s just the right mix of stylish, cozy and inspiring.
“ … it´s just the right mix „
It’s not just the interior that’s impressive: the high ceilings and generous windows create an airy feeling of space. The fine details such as handcrafted wooden tables and artfully placed decorative elements underline the unique character of this restaurant. Anyone who sits down here will immediately be surrounded by the relaxed atmosphere

The location
“ This place has its own charme.“
In summer the experience becomes even more special. The salonplafond restaurant’s spacious city garden is a small oasis that invites you to linger. Surrounded by greenery, you can enjoy relaxing hours here, far away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Whether it’s lunch outdoors or a sundowner in the evening – this place has its own charm. Since it’s still winter at the moment, I’ll definitely come by in the summer and enjoy the garden from the saloplafond.
The careful design of the outdoor area contributes to the relaxed atmosphere. High-quality garden furniture, subtle lighting and well-thought-out planting create a retreat that conveys a feeling of vacation in the middle of the city.
The food
The focus of the Salonplafond is the culinary delights. Here they rely on regional ingredients, craftsmanship perfection and a pinch of creativity. The dishes are unfussy but sophisticated – exactly what makes good cuisine. Fresh products are the focus and every dish tells its own story
And here is my little culinary story: As a starter I had the Austrian Simmental beef tartare with orange red cabbage and homemade potato brioche. We also chose the soup of the day as another starter. This was a delicious garlic cream soup with some micro greens. This time the main course was very classic. We ordered the Wiener Schnitzel baked in clarified butter and the Austrian baked wild chicken. Both with side dishes. The portions were really big, so you definitely won’t stay hungry at the end. A little more salad wouldn’t have been bad though.

The bar
Not only the menu, the bar at salonplafond also has a lot to offer. Local ingredients are used here and you can taste it. Viennese gin, Burschik vermouth and hand-picked herbs create unique cocktails that perfectly round off the ambience. Whether classic or unusual – the drinks in the salon ceiling are always worth a try.
In addition to cocktails, there are also other drinks on offer. I have to admit that for the first time in a very long time I didn’t order an Aperol Spritz, but tried something completely different. You probably won’t believe it after all my blog posts, but I ordered a non-alcoholic Rose Prosecco. Yes, you read that right. I think it’s great that you have the same experience as with real Prosecco. Great job, Salonplafond!

My Summary
The Salonplafond at the MAK museum is more than a culinary hotspot – it is an overall experience. This is where design, culture and enjoyment come together in a way that inspires. Anyone who values an exceptional atmosphere, creative cuisine and a stylish ambience is guaranteed to find what they are looking for here. A place that stays in your memory – and inspires again and again. It is definitely one of the secret spots in Vienna.
Overall, I was very satisfied with the experience. The service was very professional. After a long time, I even saw a waiter remember the order without a note. Very refreshing and professional. Otherwise, I was more than satisfied with the kitchen and the overall feeling around me. Just keep in mind that you are in a historic building and due to the high ceiling it can be a bit noisy, but nothing unpleasant.
OVERALL Conclusion
Stylish furnishings with a successful mix of Viennese tradition and modern design.
Regional ingredients, innovative dishes and a seasonal selection to suit all tastes.
High-quality cocktails, fine wines and homemade lemonades made with local ingredients.
In the heart of Vienna, ideal for a culinary break after a visit to a museum or a walk.
