The Fitzcarraldo Bar – the secret behind a machine

Come with me behind the secret door, which only reveals itself to those who know.

Bar Fitzcarraldo is a new trendy bar in Vienna, in the 7th district. – in a side street of Mariahilferstraße. The location of the bar is perfect – public transport, and a lot of other bars & restaurants are near by –  but when you stand in front of the bar according to Google Maps you don’t know where to go. The first thought that comes to mind is that it must be a mistake. By chance we saw how suddenly out of nowhere the vending machine moved to the side as if by magic and the “gate” to the bar opened.

Once inside, you feel like you’ve been transported to another time, where there were secret bars in the back room. – it reminds me a little bit at the prohibition in America. The decor is dark with gold accents – my favorite type of decor – and wonderful plant wallpaper. It’s a small bar and it only opened recently, so no wonder it was completely booked and you couldn’t get a seat without a reservation.  – I reserved 2 weeks in advance. But it was worth it for this cool experience.

And what do you do in a bar? Sipping cocktails of course…..

So I think we’ve tried almost every signature drink you offer. Starting with the “Basil Baby”, an omage of the typical Basil smash but clearly cooler thanks to the picture. Then we tried “That’s what ski says”. This cocktail was sweet and tasted like marshmallows, not just because it was garnished with one. Of course we also had to order the strongest drink they offer from the signature drinks: The Tokio Negroni. Trust me, this cocktail is really really strong. It’s a mix of dry gin, vermouth and botanic bitters, so not for the weak.

After the strongest cocktail, we thought we would try something a little weaker with the “Steirisch Martini” – a mix of 2 different vermouths and rowanberry bitters – a really interesting taste. The Cocktail “Poseidon” surprised me positively with its presentation. The shell with the edible pearls and the champagne was a really great experience – it had a luxury touch. The drink that I was a little disappointed with is the “Fortune Mule“ – unfortunately it didn’t taste as good as I imagined, was expecting something like a Moscow mule. But luckily there is the “Bari Ice Cream” cocktail – clearly the best drink of the whole evening. Not only was the serving an eye-catcher with the smoke bubble but the taste was also a 10/10. – definitely a recommendation from me.

My conclusion about the bar is that the secret entrance is a big eye-catcher and extremely unique in Vienna – my first hidden bar experience. You will also be pleasantly surprised by the appearance of the bar. The drinks and their ideas were good, the prices are typical for Vienna – unfortunately the taste of the signature drinks are not 100% mine – but it is a cool bar that you definitely have to see at least once.

Conclusion:

The overall concept of the bar is cool and unique in Vienna
