Trufflevillage – the black gold of the earth

You love it or you hate it – there is no in-between.

In October, the truffle market took place in Göttlesbrunn, about 20 minutes from Vienna by car. I came across this event by chance and I have to say that I was very happy about it. – because I love truffles, no matter what shape, type or dish – just everywhere.

The market consisted of a few stalls where specialties were offered, such as cheese, oils and sausages. – Samples could be tried without being shy. Then there was a large barn where warm food was offered and of course a wine bar, because we are in Austria – the land of wine. As a highlight there were also animals such as horses, sheep and chickens in an open enclosure, which contributed perfectly to the rural atmosphere.

But what exactly is truffle?

The truffle – also called black gold – is a mushroom that grows underground and looks like a black lump (maybe the comparison to a small piece of coal will help) – But don’t let its strange and somewhat inconspicuous appearance fool you, because it is also the most expensive mushroom in the world and highly sought after by all chefs. In recent years the truffle has become more and more popular and is now easier to obtain. And that’s fortunate because I don’t know what I would do without my beloved truffle paste!

For me, truffles go with every dish and are versatile to use. Of course, you shouldn’t overdo it with the truffle – everything with moderation and purpose, as the saying goes. Nevertheless, we tried something out when we have the opportunity to see so many truffle products in one place. First of all, of course, we tried truffle pasta made from a Parmesan wheel – fantastic – and a small hot dog with truffle mayo. The dishes were delicious, even if they were a bit small for the hefty price and would have been more of a snack than a meal. At the end and as a reminder of this unique market, we bought a soft cheese with truffles – heaven on earth.

I am fully aware that truffles are not for everyone. And honestly, that’s a good thing. Not every person can taste the same thing. – there’s more left for the others. In summary, I found the market very pretty and a great experience – you weren’t allowed to look at the prices here. But for all truffle lovers like me, it was certainly a day that will be remembered for a long time.

Conclusion:

a great market for truffle lovers
