The Vienna National Library is a true treasure in the middle of the global metropolis of Vienna. It is much more than just a library – it is a cultural and historical jewel of Austria. Located in the heart of Vienna, right next to the magnificent Heldenplatz of the Hofburg, the National Library combines architectural beauty, centuries of history and an impressive collection of knowledge. With a history dating back to the 14th century, it is now one of Europe’s most important libraries and a cultural center that attracts scientists, students, tourists and literature enthusiasts from all over the world.

Vienna is known for making you feel like a princess, at least in the inner districts. The Habsburgs did a good job there. Vienna itselfe is a large museum. There are so many beautiful buildings and museums. Where you feel like you are in the fairy tales from our childhood. Simply fantastic.

A look into history

The roots of the Vienna National Library go back to 1368, when Duke Albrecht III. von Habsburg laid the foundation for a collection of manuscripts and books. At that time it did not yet have its current name, but was part of the Habsburg court library. However, the actual expansion of the library began under Emperor Charles VI. in the early 18th century. He commissioned the famous architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach to design a representative building for the court library. His son, Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach, continued the work and completed the magnificent state hall, which is now considered the heart of the library.

In 1920, after the end of the monarchy, the Court Library was renamed the Austrian National Library and received its current status as a public institution. Since then it has been a place of knowledge, research and cultural exchange.

The attention to detail

I know that I may see everything a little bit different than others. But I’m a little princess inside. That’s why the experience of visiting the National Library was very special for me. Feeling like you are in a famous fairy tale for a moment. And not just any one, but like “Beauty & the Beast”. Majcestic high room sorounded with wood and books, and an marbel floor like a dance floor.

The National Library houses an incredibly large collection of various books. But the highlight that attracts all the people is the state hall. This can be reached via a large stone staircase, which leads to the first floor. A large, dark double-winged entrance door awaits you there. If you walk through it, you’ll find yourself in another world. The amazement never lets you go and you look excitedly in all directions. The dark bookshelves, which seem to reach up to the sky, are probably due to the special ceiling painting, filled with thousands of books. There are golden details everywhere, which I particularly appreciate.

The State Hall

The State Hall, often described as one of the most beautiful library halls in the world, is the heart of the Vienna National Library. With a length of over 80 meters, a height of almost 20 meters and a magnificent dome decorated with frescoes by Daniel Gran, the State Hall is an architectural and artistic masterpiece of the Baroque period. The frescoes show the glorification of the Habsburg dynasty and represent allegories of wisdom and science.

The collection of books from the private library of Prince Eugene of Savoy, one of the most important generals of the Habsburg Monarchy, is particularly impressive. The atmosphere in the state hall makes every visitor feel that they are in a place of inestimable cultural value.

The current exhibition

The special exhibition “Anton Bruckner – The Pious Revolutionary” is currently running in the state hall of the Vienna National Library. It illuminates the life and work of one of the most important composers of the 19th century, whose music was both deeply rooted in Catholicism and pushed the boundaries of musical conventions. – There are always various additional exhibitions in the National Library.

The exhibition shows how Bruckner’s deep faith and vision of music made him a unique artist who combined tradition and innovation in his work. On display are, among other things, the composer’s original scores, letters and personal items, which provide insights into his creative process and his life. The documents that show Bruckner’s constant self-doubt and his uncompromising devotion to music are particularly exciting
